The Process

Four Simple Steps to Getting Started.

There's nothing complicated about it, and nothing you have to figure out on your own. Here's exactly how it works, from your first message to your first session.

01

Reach Out

Book online or send us a message and tell us a little about your child. No detail is too small, and there's no obligation to go further.

02

We Match You

We pair your child with the Calgary psychologist whose expertise and style fit best — because the right match makes all the difference.

03

Your First Session

A relaxed, no-pressure conversation to understand your child and what you're hoping for. Nothing is decided or committed to on the spot.

04

Ongoing Support

Together we shape a plan that fits your child and your family, and begin — at a pace that feels right for everyone involved.

Your First Session

What to Expect the First Time.

If you're picturing something clinical or intense, you can relax — it's the opposite. Here's what a first session is really like, and what it isn't.

What It Isn't

  • Lying on a couch being analysed
  • An interrogation or a test to pass
  • Your child being put on the spot
  • Being judged for how you've handled things
  • A commitment to anything long-term

What It Is

  • A warm, relaxed conversation
  • A chance to be genuinely heard
  • Going entirely at your child's pace
  • A team on your side, never a verdict
  • A no-pressure first step, nothing more

Booking FAQs.

How Do I Book a First Appointment?

It's simple. You can book online at any time, or send us a message and we'll get back to you quickly. Just tell us a little about your child and what's prompting you to reach out — there's no need to have it all figured out first.

From there, we'll help match your child with the right psychologist and get a first session in the calendar. If you're feeling unsure where to start, reach out and a real person will happily talk you through it.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our fees are in line with the recommended rates of the Psychologists' Association of Alberta — $235 per hour when working with a Registered or Provisionally Registered Psychologist. We'll always be clear about cost up front, so there are never any surprises.

Many extended health benefit plans cover part or all of psychological services, so it's worth checking your coverage — and if cost is a worry, please reach out and we'll talk it through with you.

Do You Direct Bill Insurance?

We don't offer direct billing. Payment is made through our online booking system when you book, and you'll be emailed an invoice for your records and to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Psychological services are covered by many extended health plans, so it's always worth checking what yours includes. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you figure it out.

Do I Need a Referral?

No. In Alberta, you don't need a doctor's referral to see a registered psychologist — you can book directly with us whenever you're ready. That means there's nothing standing between you and getting your child support.

That said, if a doctor, teacher, or another professional suggested reaching out, you're welcome to share anything they've passed along; it can be helpful context, but it's never required.

How Do You Match My Child With the Right Psychologist?

Fit matters enormously, so we take it seriously. When you reach out, we consider your child's age, what they're working through, and the kind of approach and personality they're likely to respond to — then pair them with the psychologist who's the best fit.

If it turns out the match isn't quite right once you begin, that's completely okay — just tell us, and we'll help you find a better one. The goal is always for your child to feel comfortable and understood.

Do You Offer Virtual Appointments?

Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our Calgary clinic and secure virtual appointments for families across Alberta, so distance is never a barrier to getting support. Many older children and teens are very comfortable meeting online, and it can be far easier to fit around school and family life.

For younger children and more play-based work, in person is often the better fit — but we'll help you decide what suits your child, and you're welcome to mix the two.

What If My Child Doesn't Want to Come?

Very common, and not a problem at all. Lots of children — and especially teens — arrive reluctant or unsure, worried they're in trouble or that something is "wrong" with them. Our first job is simply to make it feel safe and unthreatening, and most warm up far faster than their parents expect.

If your child is really resistant, tell us when you book and we'll help you approach it in a way that doesn't turn into a battle. A reluctant child is a completely normal starting point.

What's Your Cancellation Policy?

We ask for at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule, so we can offer the time to another family. If an appointment isn't cancelled at least 48 hours ahead, the full fee will be charged.

Life happens, and we understand that — if something comes up, email your psychologist or info@creativeskypsychology.com, or call our Office Administrator at (587) 331-4464 ext 1, as soon as you can.
