Gifted Assessments for Children & Teens in Calgary

Is My Child Gifted — or Just Ahead?

The questions that stop you in your tracks. The reading that came early and fast. The memory that misses nothing. And alongside it, the parts that are harder — the intensity, the perfectionism, the boredom in a classroom that moves too slowly, the big feelings that don't match the calendar age. You've wondered whether your child is gifted, and whether school is giving them what they actually need.

A gifted assessment answers that clearly. Our Calgary psychologists use gold-standard cognitive testing to identify giftedness, confirm it where it's there, and explain what it means for your particular child — because gifted looks different in every one of them. You leave knowing what you're working with, with the documentation schools and gifted programs ask for, and a real sense of how to keep your child engaged and thriving.

Understanding Gifted Assessment

What a Gifted Assessment Actually Answers.

Giftedness isn't simply being clever or getting good grades. It's a genuinely different way of thinking and experiencing the world — faster, deeper, and often more intense — that comes with real strengths and real challenges in equal measure. A gifted assessment uses gold-standard cognitive testing to identify that clearly, rather than leaving you to guess from report cards.

It confirms giftedness where it's there, explains what it actually means for your particular child, and catches the more complicated pictures — like the child who is gifted and also has a learning difference or ADHD. The point isn't a badge or a bragging right. It's understanding a mind that works differently, so your child gets the right level of challenge, the right support, and the chance to stay genuinely engaged.

Why Gifted Isn't Always Obvious

It doesn't always look like top of the class.

Plenty of gifted children are never identified — because giftedness hides in ways that look like the opposite of what people expect.

  • Bored gifted kids often coast, act out, or quietly switch off entirely
  • Twice-exceptional children mask giftedness behind a learning difference
  • "Doing fine" and "gifted" aren't the same — one can easily hide the other
  • Some children hide their abilities to fit in with everyone around them
  • Perfectionism can stop a child ever risking showing what they can do
  • Intensity and big feelings get read as the problem, not part of the profile

Why an Answer Changes Everything

Understanding the mind changes what a child gets.

When you understand how a gifted child actually thinks, the things that looked puzzling make sense — and so does what they need to thrive.

  • The right level of challenge, instead of years of quiet boredom
  • Intensity and asynchrony finally make sense, at home and at school
  • Eligibility for gifted programs and enrichment where it fits
  • Underachievement gets caught before it hardens into a habit
  • Twice-exceptional needs get seen — the strengths and the struggles both
  • The child understands themselves, not just that they feel "different"
A gifted assessment doesn't make your child gifted. It helps everyone understand a mind that already works differently.

Whatever the result, you leave understanding your child better than you did — how they think, why some things feel far too easy while others overwhelm them, and what they need to stay engaged. If your child is gifted, you get a clear path to the right challenge and support. If they're not, you get a truer picture instead. Either way, the guessing ends.

The Assessment Process

Six Steps, From First Call to Real Answers.

A good assessment is a process, not a single appointment — and knowing exactly what's ahead makes the whole thing feel far less daunting. Here's how it unfolds, from your first conversation to a report you can actually use.

Step 01

First Conversation

A no-pressure chat about what you're seeing and hoping to understand, so we can recommend the right assessment for your child.

Step 02

Intake & History

A thorough conversation about your child's development and background, so we understand the child behind the scores before testing begins.

Step 03

Questionnaires

Where helpful, standardized rating scales completed by you and your child's teachers add context to how their abilities show up day to day.

Step 04

Cognitive Testing

Relaxed, engaging one-to-one sessions of puzzle-like tasks measuring reasoning, memory, and processing — with nothing your child can pass or fail.

Step 05

Scoring & Interpretation

We bring every piece together — testing, history, and any school input — and look for the story the whole profile is telling.

Step 06

Feedback & Report

We sit down and explain everything in plain language, then give you a clear written report with practical recommendations for home and school.

The Psychologists Behind Your Child's Assessment

A gifted assessment is only as good as the person interpreting it. Our Calgary psychologists bring advanced training in cognitive testing, deep experience with how giftedness actually presents — including the bored, the masking, and the twice-exceptional kids so often missed — and a genuine care for the mind behind every score.

Why Assess With Us

An Assessment You Can Actually Use.

Not every assessment is equal. Plenty of families come to us holding a report that's just a number, from a process that felt rushed, or with no real sense of what any of it means for their child. We do it differently — thorough testing, a real conversation about what it all means, and recommendations specific enough to change how your child's days actually feel.

And because Creative Sky is a full child psychology clinic, the answer doesn't lead to a dead end. If your child needs ongoing support after the assessment, it's already here — the same team, no starting over somewhere new.

  • Thorough, gold-standard cognitive testing — never a rushed or box-ticking evaluation.
  • A report that explains your child, not just a score — clear about what it all means.
  • A real feedback meeting, in person, with room for every question you have.
  • Clear confirmation of giftedness where the results support it — and honest answers if they don't.
  • The documentation gifted programs ask for, plus recommendations to keep your child challenged.
  • Attention to the whole child — including twice-exceptional needs, where they exist.

Gifted Assessment FAQs.

How Do I Know If My Child Is Actually Gifted?
You often can't tell from the outside, which is exactly what an assessment is for. Being bright, curious, or ahead in one subject isn't the same as being gifted in the formal sense — and, confusingly, some genuinely gifted children look bored, underachieving, or difficult rather than "advanced." What an assessment does is measure your child's actual thinking against a clear standard, so you're not guessing from report cards or wondering whether you're just a proud parent. You don't need to be sure before you book — plenty of families come simply to find out, and leave with a clear answer either way.
How Much Does a Gifted Assessment Cost?
It depends on what your child needs, so we'd rather give you a clear, specific quote than a vague range. The simplest thing is to reach out and tell us a little about your child; we'll explain exactly what's involved and what it costs before you commit to anything. One thing worth checking on your end: many extended health benefit plans cover part or all of a psychological assessment, since the work is completed by a registered psychologist. It's worth a quick look at your plan before you assume it's out of reach.
Do We Need This for a Gifted Program?
Very often, yes. Many gifted and enrichment programs — and applications for grade acceleration — ask for formal cognitive testing from a registered psychologist, and a gifted assessment provides exactly that documentation. If a specific program is your goal, it helps to tell us that up front: requirements vary between schools and boards, and we can make sure the assessment and report are set up to meet them. Even where a program doesn't strictly require it, the assessment usually strengthens the case and helps the school understand what your child actually needs.
Will the Assessment Actually Confirm Giftedness?
Where the results support it, yes — a gifted assessment is the standard, recognised way giftedness is formally identified, and we can confirm it clearly and explain what it means for your particular child. And if the results don't reach that threshold, we'll tell you honestly and explain what the profile does show instead, because that's useful too. We also look out for the more complex pictures — like the twice-exceptional child who is gifted and also has a learning difference or ADHD — which a simpler screening can easily flatten into an unremarkable average.
How Is This Different From a Cognitive Assessment?
They're closely related — giftedness is identified using cognitive testing, so a gifted assessment is really a cognitive assessment with a particular question in mind. The difference is mostly the focus. Families choose a gifted assessment when the specific goal is to confirm giftedness or to meet a gifted-program requirement. A cognitive assessment is the broader "we want to understand how our child's mind works" starting point, which may or may not be about giftedness. If you're not sure which you need, that's what the first conversation is for — we'll point you to the right one.
Will My Child's School Accept the Report?
Yes. An assessment completed by a registered psychologist is exactly the kind of documentation schools and gifted programs rely on — whether it's confirming eligibility for enrichment, supporting a request for extension or acceleration, or making sense of an uneven profile. We write our reports with that in mind, with clear recommendations a school can actually act on. If it's helpful, we're glad to frame the recommendations around your child's specific setting, so it turns into real support rather than a document that sits in a drawer.
Isn't My Child Too Young to Assess?
It's a fair question, and it depends on the age and what you're hoping to learn. Cognitive testing can be done with quite young children, but the younger they are, the more a snapshot can shift as they grow — so we're thoughtful about timing and about how firmly to read any result. Some gifted programs also have their own preferred age windows for testing. The best thing is usually to talk it through: tell us how old your child is and what's prompting the question, and we'll give you an honest view on whether now is the right moment or whether it's worth waiting a little.
What Happens After the Assessment?
You sit down with us. The report isn't emailed to you cold — we walk you through everything in person, in plain language, with room for every question you've been saving up. You leave understanding not just the scores but your child: how they think, what fuels them, where the intensity comes from, and what they need to stay engaged. From there, it's entirely up to you. Some families take the report straight to their school or a gifted program. Others want ongoing support — and because Creative Sky is a full child psychology clinic, that's already here, with the same team. The assessment is a starting point, not a finish line.

Take the First Step

Stop Wondering. Start Understanding.

You've likely wondered for a while — is my child gifted, and are they getting what they actually need? Wondering rarely gets a bright child the right challenge. A gifted assessment gives you a clear answer, an understanding of how your child's mind really works, and the documentation schools and gifted programs ask for. Whatever the result, you'll know exactly what you're working with — and how to keep your child engaged, challenged, and thriving instead of quietly coasting.
