Autism Assessments for Children & Teens in Calgary

Understanding How Your Child Sees the World.

You know your child. The deep, wholehearted interests. The way certain sounds or textures are genuinely too much. The comfort of routine, and how hard the unexpected can land. The moments in a group where they seem to be working something out that comes easily to everyone else. None of it means anything is wrong — but you've started to wonder whether there's a fuller way to understand it.

An autism assessment is a careful, respectful way of doing exactly that. Our Calgary psychologists take the time to understand how your child experiences the world — how they think, connect, communicate, and process everything around them. It's how you find out whether your child is autistic, and either way, you come away understanding them more deeply, with a clear sense of what genuinely helps them thrive.

Understanding Autism Assessment

What an Autism Assessment Actually Answers.

An autism assessment isn't a test your child can pass or fail. It's a careful, unhurried way of understanding how they communicate, connect, play, move, and make sense of the world around them. We look at strengths as closely as challenges, across home and school, and take the time to see your child as they actually are — not as a checklist.

It answers the question you've been holding — is my child autistic? — and it does so with care, because how that question gets answered matters enormously. Being autistic isn't a flaw to be found; it's a different way of experiencing the world, one that comes with real strengths as well as real challenges. The goal isn't to label your child. It's to understand them, so the support around them finally fits who they are.

Why Autism Gets Missed

It rarely looks like the textbook picture.

The old stereotype overlooks a great many autistic children — especially the ones who've learned, at real cost, to look like everyone else.

  • Girls in particular often mask, copying others until they're exhausted
  • Bright, verbal children get missed because they "seem fine" on the surface
  • Sensory overwhelm gets read as fussiness, shyness, or bad behaviour
  • Deep, focused interests are dismissed as quirks rather than understood
  • Social effort that's invisible to others leaves a child quietly drained
  • By the time anyone wonders, a child has often worked twice as hard to keep up

Why an Answer Changes Everything

Understanding replaces years of being misread.

When you understand how a child actually experiences the world, the things that looked like difficulty start to make sense — and so does the support.

  • The child stops being called "difficult" and starts being understood
  • "Won't" is finally recognised as "this is genuinely hard for me"
  • Accommodations and support can fit how your child actually works
  • It opens the door to services, school support, and community
  • Families stop quietly blaming themselves — or each other
  • Given the words for their own experience, many children feel deep relief
An autism assessment doesn't change who your child is. It helps the world finally understand them.

Whatever the outcome, you leave knowing your child more deeply — how they experience the world, what overwhelms them, and what helps them feel safe and like themselves. If your child is autistic, you get a clear path to the right support and a language for who they've always been. If they're not, you get a truer explanation instead. Either way, understanding replaces guessing.

The Assessment Process

Six Steps, From First Call to Real Answers.

A good assessment is a process, not a single appointment — and knowing exactly what's ahead makes the whole thing feel far less daunting. Here's how it unfolds, from your first conversation to a report you can actually use.

Step 01

First Conversation

A no-pressure chat about what you're seeing and hoping to understand, so we can recommend the right assessment for your child.

Step 02

Developmental History

An in-depth conversation about your child's early development, milestones, and the whole story so far — the foundation every good autism assessment rests on.

Step 03

Questionnaires

Standardized rating scales completed by you and your child's teachers, so we understand how your child shows up across home and school.

Step 04

Meeting Your Child

Relaxed, play-based sessions where we spend time with your child — seeing how they communicate, connect, and engage, with nothing to pass or fail.

Step 05

Bringing It Together

We integrate every piece — history, questionnaires, and our time with your child — and consider it carefully against what we know about autism.

Step 06

Feedback & Report

We sit down and explain everything in plain language, then give you a clear written report with practical recommendations for home and school.

The Psychologists Behind Your Child's Assessment

An autism assessment is only as good — and as kind — as the people carrying it out. Our Calgary psychologists bring advanced training in autism assessment, deep experience with how autism actually shows up across different children, including the ones who mask and are so often missed, and a genuine warmth toward every child who walks through the door.

Why Assess With Us

An Assessment You Can Actually Use.

Not every assessment is equal. Plenty of families come to us after a process that felt rushed or clinical, holding a report that named a diagnosis but never really explained their child. We do it differently — an unhurried, respectful assessment, a real conversation about what it means, and recommendations specific enough to change your child's actual days.

And because Creative Sky is a full child psychology clinic, the answer doesn't lead to a dead end. If your child needs ongoing support after the assessment, it's already here — the same team, no starting over somewhere new.

  • A thorough, gold-standard autism assessment — unhurried, and never a checklist run-through.
  • A report that explains your child, not just a diagnosis — clear about what it all means.
  • A real feedback meeting, in person, with room for every question you have.
  • A formal autism diagnosis where the results support it — and honest answers if they don't.
  • Documentation that helps open doors — school support, services, and funding where available.
  • Therapy and ongoing support already under one roof, if the answer points that way.

Autism Assessment FAQs.

How Do I Know If My Child Needs an Autism Assessment?

Usually it's a quiet feeling that's been with you a while. The way your child experiences the world seems a little different — in how they connect, communicate, handle change, or respond to sound, texture, and busyness. It might have been raised by a teacher, or it might just be something you've noticed and wondered about on your own.

You don't need to be sure to reach out. Plenty of families come simply wanting to understand their child better, and an assessment is the clearest way to do that. Sometimes the answer is autism; sometimes it's something else, or nothing that needs a name. Either way, you come away understanding your child, rather than wondering.

How Much Does an Autism Assessment Cost?

It depends on your child's age and what the assessment needs to cover, so we'd rather give you a clear, specific quote than a vague range. The simplest thing is to reach out and tell us a little about your child; we'll explain exactly what's involved and what it costs before you commit to anything.

One thing worth checking on your end: many extended health benefit plans cover part or all of a psychological assessment, since the work is completed by a registered psychologist. It's worth a quick look at your plan before you assume it's out of reach.

We're on a Waitlist Already — Is a Private Assessment Worth It?

For many families, the wait is the whole reason they come to us. Public autism assessments can take a year or more — and that's a long time when your child needs understanding and support now, and when early support so often makes the biggest difference. A private assessment gets you answers in a far shorter timeframe.

Moving privately doesn't mean giving up your place in the public system if you'd rather keep it. But for a lot of parents, waiting a year while their child struggles is the hardest part, and being able to move sooner brings real relief. If timing is weighing on you, it's worth a conversation.

Will We Actually Get a Diagnosis?

Yes — where the assessment supports one. Our autism assessments are completed by a registered psychologist and can provide a formal diagnosis when the evidence is there, along with a clear explanation of what it means for your particular child. You won't be left with a vague "some traits" summary that nobody can act on.

And if the picture doesn't point to autism, we'll tell you that just as clearly, and explain what does seem to be going on instead — because that answer matters just as much. A diagnosis is never the goal for its own sake. Understanding your child is.

My Child Talks and Does Well at School — Could They Still Be Autistic?

Absolutely — and these are exactly the children who get missed for years. Autism has nothing to do with intelligence or how well a child speaks. Many autistic children are bright, articulate, and do well academically, while quietly working extremely hard to manage everything else. This is especially common in girls and in kids who learn to mask — to watch, copy, and hold it together at school, then fall apart at home where it's safe.

That "coping" is often invisible and genuinely exhausting, and it's a big part of why a thorough assessment matters. We look beneath the surface a busy classroom can't see — which is precisely where these children have been managing on their own for far too long.

Will a Diagnosis Label or Limit My Child?

It's one of the most common worries parents bring, and it comes from love. In practice, families usually find the opposite happens. A diagnosis doesn't put something onto your child — it explains something that was already there. What tends to limit children isn't understanding; it's being misunderstood, and spending years being told to try harder at things that are genuinely hard for them.

An accurate understanding is what opens doors — to the right support, to self-understanding, and to a kinder set of expectations at home and at school. Many children, especially older ones, feel real relief at finally having language for their own experience. It's not a limit. For most, it's the start of things making sense.

Will This Help With Funding and School Support?

A formal assessment is often an important piece of accessing school support and funding, and our reports are written with that in mind — clear, specific, and built to be genuinely useful to the people who make those decisions. It's exactly the kind of documentation schools use to put accommodations and supports in place.

Funding programs can have their own specific requirements, and they change over time, so we'd always encourage you to check the current criteria for your situation. If you tell us what you're hoping the assessment will help with, we can talk you through whether it's likely to fit before you begin — so there are no surprises.

What Happens After the Assessment?

You sit down with us. The report isn't emailed to you cold — we walk you through everything in person, gently and in plain language, with room for every question you've been holding. You leave understanding not just a diagnosis but your child: how they experience the world, what helps, and what they need from the people around them.

From there, it's entirely up to you. Some families take the report to their school and build support from it. Others want ongoing help — and because Creative Sky is a full child psychology clinic, that's already here, with the same team who came to know your child. The assessment is a beginning, not an end.

Take the First Step

Stop Wondering. Start Understanding.

You've probably been wondering for a while now — quietly, in the back of your mind, whether there's a fuller way to understand your child. Wondering is exhausting, and it rarely gets a child what they need. An autism assessment ends the wondering. Our Calgary psychologists take the time to understand how your child experiences the world, give you a clear answer in plain language, and help you find the support that genuinely fits. Whatever the answer turns out to be, you'll understand your child more deeply — and they'll have people who finally understand them too.
