ADHD Assessments for Children & Teens in Calgary
Is It ADHD, or Is It Something Else?
The forgotten homework that was definitely done. The lost water bottle, again. The teacher who says they're bright but not applying themselves. The bedtime that unravels, the instructions that don't land, the meltdown when a good day suddenly tips over. You've wondered whether it's ADHD — and you've also wondered whether you're overthinking it. An assessment is how you stop wondering.
ADHD looks different in every child, and it hides especially well in bright kids and quiet daydreamers who were never disruptive enough to worry anyone. Our Calgary psychologists carry out thorough, evidence-based ADHD assessments that sort out what's actually going on — ADHD, something that looks like it, or more than one thing at once — and give you a clear diagnosis where the results support it, plus a practical plan for home and school.
Understanding ADHD Assessment
What an ADHD Assessment Actually Answers.
An ADHD assessment isn't a quick questionnaire or a single test. It's a careful process of gathering the whole picture — how your child's attention, focus, activity, and impulse control actually work, across home and school, compared to what's typical for their age. We look at their history, their strengths, standardized measures, and reports from the adults who see them every day, then bring it together into one clear answer.
Crucially, it's a process of ruling things out as much as ruling ADHD in. Anxiety, learning difficulties, sleep problems, giftedness, and simply being younger than classmates can all look like ADHD from the outside — and sometimes ADHD travels alongside one of them. A good assessment untangles that, so you're not left treating the wrong thing. The goal isn't a label. It's the truth about what's making things hard, and what will genuinely help.
Why ADHD Gets Missed
It doesn't always look like the stereotype. The picture most people carry — a boy who can't sit still — is only one version. A great many children with ADHD are overlooked for years because they don't fit it.
- Inattentive ADHD is quiet — daydreaming, not disrupting, easy to miss
- Bright kids compensate, coasting until the work finally outpaces them
- Girls are diagnosed later and less often, because they mask it well
- "Lazy," "careless," and "not trying" are the labels it hides behind
- Good days convince everyone they could do it if they wanted to
- By the time it's obvious, a child has often decided they're the problem
Why an Answer Changes Everything
It's not about the diagnosis. It's about what it unlocks.Parents sometimes hesitate, worried a diagnosis will limit their child. In practice, the opposite is usually true — an answer is what opens doors that were closed.
- It reframes years of "won't" into "couldn't yet," for everyone
- The child stops being the problem and gets to be understood
- School can put real accommodations and support in place
- It opens the door to treatment, including the medication conversation
- Strategies finally fit the actual brain, so they start to stick
- And the self-blame quietly begins to lift — often the biggest change
Whatever the result, you leave understanding your child better than you did — how their mind works, what they're genuinely good at, and what will make daily life easier. If it's ADHD, you get a clear path forward. If it isn't, you get the real explanation instead. Either way, the guessing ends.
The Assessment Process
Our Process, From First Call to Real Answers.
A good assessment is a process, not a single appointment — and knowing exactly what's ahead makes the whole thing feel far less daunting. Here's how it unfolds, from your first conversation to a report you can actually use.
Step 01
First Conversation
A no-pressure chat about what you're seeing and hoping to understand, so we can recommend the right assessment for your child.
Step 02
Intake & History
A thorough conversation with you about your child's development, history, and how things look at home and at school.
Step 03
Questionnaires
Standardized rating scales completed by you, your child's teachers, and sometimes your child — capturing the full picture across settings.
Step 04
Testing Sessions
One or more relaxed, engaging sessions with your child, using gold-standard tools — with nothing they can pass or fail.
Step 05
Scoring & Interpretation
We bring every piece together — testing, questionnaires, history, and school input — and look for the story the whole picture is telling.
Step 06
Feedback & Report
We sit down and explain everything in plain language, then give you a clear written report with practical recommendations for home and school.

An Assessment You Can Actually Use.
Not every assessment is equal. Plenty of families come to us holding a report they can't decode, from a process that felt rushed, or after months on a waitlist that only ever looked at the classroom. We do it differently — thorough testing, a real conversation about what it means, and recommendations specific enough to change your child's actual days.
And because Creative Sky is a full child psychology clinic, the answer doesn't lead to a dead end. If your child needs ongoing support after the assessment, it's already here — the same team, no starting over somewhere new.
- Thorough, gold-standard testing — never a rushed or box-ticking evaluation.
- A report written to be understood, not decoded — clear about what it all means.
- A real feedback meeting, in person, with room for every question you have.
- A formal ADHD diagnosis where the results support it — and honest answers if they don't.
- School-ready recommendations, plus documentation your doctor can use for next steps.
- Therapy and ongoing support already under one roof, if the answer points that way.

How Do I Know If My Child Even Needs Assessing?
The honest test is whether the same worries keep coming back. A one-off rough patch usually settles on its own. But when the reports keep saying "not reaching potential," when homework is a nightly battle, when a bright child keeps stalling in ways nobody can quite explain — that's the point where guessing stops being useful.
You don't have to be certain it's ADHD to book. Plenty of families come in simply wanting to understand what's going on, and an assessment is often the fastest way to stop wondering. Sometimes the answer is ADHD. Sometimes it's anxiety, a learning difference, or nothing that needs a label at all. Either way, you leave knowing.
How Much Does an ADHD Assessment Cost?
It depends on what your child needs — a focused ADHD assessment and a broader evaluation that rules other things in or out aren't the same amount of work, so we'd rather give you a clear, specific quote than a vague range. The simplest thing is to reach out and tell us a little about your child; we'll explain exactly what's involved and what it costs before you commit to anything.
One thing worth checking on your end: many extended health benefit plans cover part or all of a psychological assessment, since the work is completed by a registered psychologist. It's worth a quick look at your plan before you assume it's out of reach.
We're Already on a Waitlist — Is a Private Assessment Worth It?
For a lot of families, the honest answer is the wait itself. Public and school-based assessments can take many months, sometimes more than a year — and that's a long time for a child to keep struggling while everyone waits. A private assessment gets you answers in weeks rather than seasons, which matters most when a child is falling behind or losing confidence right now.
It's also usually more thorough than a school screening, which is understandably built to look mainly at the classroom. We look at the whole child. If you're on a waitlist and things feel urgent, moving privately doesn't mean you've wasted your place — it means you stop waiting.
Will We Actually Get a Diagnosis?
Yes — where the results support one. Our assessments are completed by a registered psychologist and can provide a formal diagnosis of ADHD when the evidence is there. You won't be left with a vague "some traits" summary that nobody can act on.
And if the results don't point to ADHD, we'll tell you that just as clearly, and explain what does seem to be going on instead. A diagnosis is never the goal for its own sake — the goal is the truth about your child. Sometimes that's a diagnosis; sometimes it's the relief of ruling one out.
Do You Handle Medication?
Not directly — psychologists don't prescribe medication, and that's a conversation for your family doctor or a paediatrician. What we can do is arguably more useful at the assessment stage: give you a clear, well-documented diagnosis and report that your doctor can rely on when you have that conversation.
Whether or not to consider medication is entirely your family's decision, and there's no pressure either way. Plenty of children do beautifully with school accommodations, therapy, and support at home. The report simply makes sure that if you do talk to a doctor, you're walking in with solid information rather than starting from scratch.
Will My Child's School Accept the Report?
Yes. A psychological assessment completed by a registered psychologist is exactly the kind of documentation schools use to put supports and accommodations in place. We write our reports with that in mind — clear, specific recommendations a teacher or learning team can actually act on, not just a diagnosis and a full stop.
If it's helpful, we're glad to frame the recommendations around the realities of your child's classroom, and we'll make sure the report speaks the language schools work in. The whole point is that it turns into real help, not a document that sits in a drawer.
Isn't My Child Too Young to Assess?
It's a fair worry, and the answer is that it depends on the age and the question. Very early on, we're careful not to over-label a young child who may simply be developing at their own pace — a lot of lively four-year-olds are just lively four-year-olds. We'd rather tell you that than hand you a label they don't need.
That said, waiting until a child is struggling badly isn't kindness either. If school has become hard, if their confidence is taking hits, or if daily life at home is genuinely difficult, it's worth a conversation regardless of age. Reach out and tell us how old your child is and what you're seeing — we'll give you an honest view on whether now is the right time.
What Happens After the Assessment?
You sit down with us. The report isn't emailed to you cold — we walk you through everything in person, in plain language, with room for every question you've been saving up. You leave understanding not just the label but your child: where they get stuck, why, and what actually helps.
From there, it's entirely up to you. Some families take the report to their school or doctor and manage from there. Others want ongoing support — and because Creative Sky is a full child psychology clinic, that's already here, with the same team. The assessment is a starting point, not a finish line.
Take the First Step
Stop Wondering. Start Understanding.
You've probably been guessing for a while now — is it ADHD, is it something else, is it just them? Guessing is exhausting, and it rarely gets a child the right help. An assessment ends the guessing. Our Calgary psychologists give you a thorough evaluation, a clear answer in plain language, and a plan you can actually use at home and at school. Whatever the answer turns out to be, you'll finally know what you're working with — and your child will have people who understand exactly how their mind works.
