Behaviour Therapy in Calgary
Behind Every Behaviour Is a Reason.
The meltdowns that come out of nowhere. The defiance, the aggression, the flat-out refusal. The exhausting sense that you've tried everything and nothing sticks — and the quiet worry that maybe your child is just "difficult." It's draining, and it's isolating, and it can leave the most loving parent feeling like they're getting it all wrong.
But behaviour is never random, and it's never just being bad — it's communication. Every hard behaviour is a child trying to meet a need or cope with something they can't yet manage. Behaviour therapy looks beneath the surface to understand what's really being said, and helps your child build the skills they're missing. Our Calgary psychologists work with the whole picture — never to punish a child, always to understand them.
Understanding Behaviour Therapy
What Behaviour Therapy Actually Is.
Behaviour therapy isn't about controlling a child, or punishing the behaviour out of them until they comply. It's the opposite: a warm, evidence-based process that looks at what's driving the behaviour and builds the skills underneath it. Led by a registered psychologist, it pays attention to the whole picture — what happens before a behaviour, what it achieves, and the need or missing skill it points to.
The result is fewer hard moments, yes — but through understanding, not force. We help you see what the behaviour is really communicating, respond in ways that actually help, and give your child the skills they've been missing. Because a child who "won't" is so often a child who "can't" — at least not yet. Change what's underneath, and the behaviour changes with it.
Why the Behaviour Happens
Behaviour is a symptom, not the problem.Hard behaviour is almost always the visible tip of something underneath — and understanding that is where real change begins.
- It's communication — of a need a child can't yet put into words
- It often points to a missing skill, not a bad attitude
- A flooded nervous system can't access calm or reason
- Anxiety, ADHD, or sensory overload frequently sit beneath it
- The child usually isn't choosing to make life hard
- Punishment rarely touches whatever's actually driving it
How We Help It Change
Understand first, then build skills.Rather than clamping down on the behaviour, we work out what it's for and grow the abilities that make it unnecessary.
- Figure out what the behaviour is trying to communicate
- Find the triggers and patterns you might not have spotted
- Teach the missing skills — regulation, flexibility, coping
- Coach you to respond in ways that calm rather than escalate
- Build on your child's strengths, not just their struggles
- Create change that lasts, because it addresses the cause
When you understand what's underneath the behaviour, everything shifts — the frustration eases, the strategies finally start to work, and your child gets to be understood instead of labelled. This was never about breaking a child's will. It's about giving them the skills to handle a hard world.
How It Works
What Behaviour Therapy Actually Looks Like.
There's no bribing, no punishing, and no breaking a child down here. It's calm, curious, and built entirely on understanding — here's how the work tends to unfold.
Understanding the Full Picture
We start by getting to know your child and your family — the behaviour, yes, but also the strengths, the context, and everything sitting around it.
Finding the Function
Every behaviour is doing a job. We work out what yours is really communicating — the need it's meeting, or the thing it's helping your child avoid.
Spotting the Triggers
Together we map the patterns — what tends to come before the hard moments — so the flashpoints stop feeling random and start becoming predictable.
Building the Missing Skills
We teach the abilities underneath the behaviour — managing frustration, staying flexible, calming down — so your child has a better option than melting down.
Coaching You
Because you're there for the hard moments, much of the work is with you — practical ways to respond that calm the storm instead of feeding it.
Change That Sticks
Because we've changed what was driving the behaviour, the progress holds — and home starts to feel calmer, for your child and for you.
How We Help
Understanding, Not Control.
There are no sticker charts sold as a cure-all here, and no one-size-fits-all discipline plan. We start by understanding your child — what's driving the behaviour, what skills are missing, and what's happening around the flashpoints. The approach is warm, evidence-based, and never punitive, because a child who feels understood is a child who can actually change.
From there, we teach the skills sitting underneath the behaviour and coach you on how to respond in ways that calm rather than escalate. Whether it's meltdowns, defiance, aggression, or flat refusal, we help your child build better ways to cope — and help you feel less like you're failing and more like you finally have a plan that works.
- Start by understanding what's really driving the behaviour.
- Look beneath the surface, never just at the surface.
- Teach the missing skills — regulation, flexibility, and coping.
- Coach you to respond in ways that calm rather than escalate.
- Build on your child's strengths, never shame their struggles.
- Create change that lasts, because it addresses the cause.

Families throughout Alberta can access support through secure online sessions, so distance is never a barrier to getting help. Behaviour therapy is a particularly good fit for video, because so much of the work is coaching you — the flashpoints happen at your kitchen table and in the car, not in our office, and much of what shifts them is guiding you through how to respond in the moment. That travels anywhere in the province. Prefer to come in? Our Calgary clinic is always here, and you're welcome to mix the two.

When the Behaviour Is a Signal
Challenging behaviour is so often the most visible sign of something sitting underneath. When a child melts down, defies, or lashes out again and again, it can point to an unrecognised difficulty — ADHD, anxiety, autism, sensory needs, or a learning difference that's leaving them overwhelmed and out of options. Understanding what's really going on frequently changes everything: the behaviour finally makes sense, and support can target the actual cause rather than just the symptom. It doesn't label your child — it explains what they've been trying to tell you all along. Where it would help, our psychologists can guide you toward the right assessment — all under one roof, so nothing has to start over.

Behaviour Therapy FAQs.
Isn't Behaviour Therapy Just Discipline by Another Name?
No — and it's an important distinction. Discipline tries to stop a behaviour from the outside, usually through consequences. Behaviour therapy works from the inside out: understanding why the behaviour is happening and building the skills the child is missing, so the behaviour becomes unnecessary rather than just forbidden.
That's why it tends to work when discipline alone hasn't. If a child could behave differently, they usually would — hard behaviour is a sign they're stuck, not defiant for its own sake. We help them get unstuck, which lasts far longer than any punishment.
Do You Use Sticker Charts, Rewards, and Punishments?
Not as a quick fix. Reward charts can have a small place for very specific, skill-based goals, but on their own they rarely touch what's really driving the behaviour — which is why they so often work for a week and then fizzle. If a child can't yet manage frustration, a sticker won't give them that ability.
Our focus is on understanding the cause and building the underlying skills, alongside coaching you on how to respond. It's less about a system of carrots and sticks and more about genuine, lasting change — the kind that doesn't collapse the moment the novelty wears off.
My Child Is Fine at School but Falls Apart at Home — Why?
This is incredibly common, and it's usually a good sign, oddly enough. Many children spend all day holding themselves together at school — following rules, masking, coping with demands — and by the time they get home to the safest place they know, they've simply run out of capacity. The meltdown at home is the release valve.
It means home is where they feel safe enough to fall apart, which is a form of trust, even when it doesn't feel like it. It also means the behaviour isn't "just for you" or a sign you're doing something wrong. Understanding this pattern is often the first step to easing it.
Do I Come, or Does My Child?
Often a mix, and with younger children especially, a lot of the work is with you. Since you're there for the behaviour as it happens, coaching you on how to understand and respond to it is one of the most powerful levers we have — the support is then there every single day, not just in a weekly session.
Depending on your child's age and what's going on, we'll also work directly with them to build specific skills like managing frustration or handling transitions. We'll figure out the right balance together — but you being involved isn't a sign the problem is you; it's simply how change happens fastest.
What Kinds of Behaviour Can You Help With?
A wide range. Common reasons include frequent meltdowns and tantrums, defiance and refusal, aggression like hitting or biting, difficulty with transitions and flexibility, and trouble following instructions or managing big feelings. We also help with behaviour that's flared up around a change, a stress, or a hard time.
Sometimes there's a clear trigger, and sometimes it just feels like everything is a battle. Both are completely valid reasons to reach out — and understanding what's underneath is the same starting point either way.
Is It Too Late If It's Been Going On for Years?
Not at all. Long-standing patterns can feel immovable, especially when you've been living with them for years, but behaviour is built on skills — and skills can be learned at any age. Once you understand what's driving it and start building what's missing, even well-worn patterns begin to shift.
It may take a little patience if things have been entrenched for a while, but "we've always been like this" is a description, not a life sentence. Plenty of families arrive feeling hopeless after years of struggle and are surprised by how much can still change.
What If My Child's Behaviour Is Really Extreme?
Please know you're not alone, and it's not a lost cause. Intense behaviour — big aggression, self-harm, or meltdowns that feel frightening — is more common than many exhausted parents realise, and it's exactly the kind of thing our psychologists are experienced in supporting. Extreme behaviour usually means a child is extremely overwhelmed, not extremely bad.
We'll take it seriously, work with you on safety alongside the underlying skills, and help you understand what's fuelling it. If your child is ever at immediate risk of harming themselves or someone else, don't wait for an appointment — contact emergency services or a crisis line. Otherwise, reach out and we'll help you find the way forward.
How Long Will It Take?
It varies, and we won't guess before we've met your family. Sometimes a few focused sessions to understand the behaviour and adjust how it's handled can shift things noticeably; other times, especially with more entrenched or complex patterns, steadier support helps more. It depends on what's driving it and the pace that fits your child.
What we can promise is that we won't drag it out. We'll review progress with you and be honest when it feels like you've got what you need. The goal is always to leave you with a calmer home and the confidence to handle what comes next on your own.
Take the First Step
Your Child Isn't the Problem.
When behaviour is hard, it's easy to feel like you're failing, or like your child is "just difficult." Neither is true. Behind every hard behaviour is a child trying to cope with something they can't yet manage — and once you understand what that is, everything can start to change. Our Calgary psychologists help you see what the behaviour is telling you, build the skills underneath it, and find a calmer way through — without blame, and without breaking your child's spirit. You don't have to keep white-knuckling it. There's a reason, and there's a way forward.
